We at Share A Book India Association run our curriculum on the basis of 6 core values which are Creativity, Curiosity, Selfless service, Empathy, Observation and Team Spirit which are also the central themes of the storytelling sessions held by our volunteers every Saturday.
Therefore, we have decided to bring to you a series of articles that represent these above-mentioned subjects. This article, first in line, is based on the first value which is Creativity.
1. Grandma's bag of stories by Sudha Murthy
Who can resist a good story, especially when it’s being told by Grandma? From her bag emerges tales of kings and cheats, monkeys and mice, bears and gods. Here comes the bear who ate some really bad dessert and got very angry; a lazy man who would not put out a fire till it reached his beard; a princess who got turned into an onion; a queen who discovered silk, and many more weird and wonderful people and animals.Grandma tells the stories over long summer days and nights, as seven children enjoy life in her little town. The stories entertain, educate and provide hours of enjoyment to them.
2. Nurturing creativity by Rebecca Isbell &Sonia Akiko Yoshizava
Journey into the realm of creativity, where children and teachers try new ideas and grow into creative, critical thinkers who are free to make mistakes and encouraged to learn from them. Guiding questions help readers see possibilities that will spark children’s curiosity and invite exploration. Specific tips, such as a list of phrases that support creative thinking, guide readers in nurturing creativity.
3. Something from nothing by Pheobe Gilman
Something From Nothing, by Phoebe Gilman (published by Scholastic) - "A modern adaptation of a favourite Jewish tale, made alive with beautiful illustrations. This Jewish folktale describes how the blanket grandfather had made for young Joseph is transformed over the years into a jacket, a button, and, ultimately, a story.
4. Time to sleep by Demise Fleming
Denise Fleming presents a warm-hearted story about animals of the forest settling down for their winter nap. But, like children who must go to bed for the night, they each find a way to put it off just a little bit longer. Richly illustrated in fall colors, Denise Fleming's story book world is right on target for preschoolers.
5. Trouble with Magic by Asha Nehmiah
The book is a collection of ten stories, from the hilarious story about the weird bird that talks and sings in twenty-one languages, to the singer whose voice makes plants grow faster.
